John on Bike

Hi we are Bev & John Scott of B.J. Farm, Alpacas & llamas N.Z.

Our picturesque farm is approximately 50 minutes North of Auckland – on the East Coast of Warkworth at Goldsworthy Bay, just before Martins Bay, overlooking the sea, consisting of approximately 25 acres, 3  blocks, separated by covenant bush areas which we have fenced off.  We have done extensive landscaping with native trees and flax planting within these areas, so as they continue to grow it will give more wind break and shelter for the animals.

John spent many months erecting our post and railing fencing after designing the paddock layout for the farm and forming roadways etc.  John comes from a building background, enabling us to erect excellent sheds, yards and handling facilities which quickly became our registered, MAF, Pre Export Isolation farm with Quarantine Facilities. (Refer EXPORT page)

We have successfully exported alpacas to the United Kingdom, Finland and Switzerland.  A few years ago we also exported a group of our own llamas to the Sheikh, in Middle East, Dubai.

When we moved up here to retire in 2002 from  the North Shore of Auckland area,  we had been farming several hundred South Africian Angora and Boer goats, which for many years we were exporting 100 to 200 goats every year to many other countries.  We only brought with us about 6 goats and our smaller herd of Chilean llamas which had been our hobby since 1989, starting with one of the first llamas to ever come into N.Z.

Bev in her younger days grew up on a pedigree Jersey Dairy farm which gave her a good grounding in animal husbandry and farm management.  Getting married and moving to the big city gave Bev other challengers in her work career, she managed a large law firm for a good number of years – then came the urge to own her own business, so she opened up a  ladies fashion boutique which she successfully ran for 11 years.  Being involved in manufacturing and design and understanding, what was needed and required to get an end product.  Bev headed back to the ‘grass roots,’ - we purchased a medium sized piece of land in the Albany basin and while John continued to work fulltime in the building construction area, Bev developed the farm, starting out with angora (mohair) and boer goats and building a rather large export business.

With moving up to Goldsworthy Bay and starting again to develop another farm, it was much easier to contemplate and achieve this goal with both of us able to work full time together on the project – remember this was to be ‘our retirement plan’.  No sooner did we get the buildings and fencing up, Bev was back on the road in search of a few ‘top quality’ alpacas.  This very quickly saw us traveling to Australia to see what animals we could import.  We realized there  was a need to be able to Import alpacas direct into Auckland instead of the animals flying into Christchurch and being transported all the way back up to Auckland, – very stressful for both animals and owners – not to mention the costs involved. We took up the next challenge to become the “Clearance Agents” for Mariah Hill Alpacas who own their own Quarantine Station, in Victoria, Melbourne.  Organizing and clearing shipments of alpacas “on behalf of other breeders’ to make it easier for all breeders to Import their own animals if they so wished without the stress of the ever changing Import regulations and requirements etc. (Refer IMPORT page) This was a very natural extension of our farming, having owned llamas for many years and enjoyed the ‘camilid’ contact, mohair goats, which gave Bev an excellent understand of fibre and having done fibre classing and the SRS course she already knew what she was looking for in choosing alpacas. We believe the quality of the fibre is most important handle, luster, crimp, low micron with high density and alignment, forming cluster bundles in the fleece.  This is Bev’s criteria both in selecting and bleeding animals which has already given us a great deal of success in the showing of their animals and their fleeces.

Because of Bev’s involvement with spinning & weaving and the love of natural coloured fibre – this is our reason for choosing to own and breed many different solid coloured alpacas.
